Hellebores (also known as winter roses) are a popular shade-loving outdoor plant, known for their unusual pretty flowers. They’re easy to care for, and make a great addition to any garden!
Hellebores do spread and self-seed, however seeds are not identical to the parent.
There are two main ways to propagate hellebores: by seed or by division.
Growing hellebores from seed is the easiest method, and can be done directly in the ground or in pots. Sow the seeds in a well-drained soil in early spring, and keep them moist until they germinate. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out so that they are spaced about 25 cms apart.
Division is the best way to propagate mature plants of the stemless variety. It can be done in spring or autumn. Carefully dig up the plant, and using a sharp knife, divide the rootball into 2 or 3 sections. Replant each section in a prepared hole, and water well.
With either method, it can take a year or two for the plants to flower. But once they do, you’ll be rewarded with pretty blooms in a wide range of colors.
Rhizomes should be planted immediately and not left to dry out.
